Teen Parent Schools in New Zealand

Hawke’s Bay School for Teenage Parents

Second Chance Education

The Hawke’s Bay School for Teenage Parents is based at William Colenso College in Napier and provides a second chance education for young parents from Napier, Hastings, Clive, Havelock North, Flaxmere and Bridge Pa. The school was opened in January 2000 and has a roll of 40 students.

Our vision is to provide a facility where young parents can complete their secondary school education in a safe and caring environment with experienced and committed teachers. We want our young parents and their children to be confident, connected, actively involved in their communities and to be lifelong learners.

Students can enrol at any time during the school year. We welcome you to contact us to set up a visit.

Facilities & Services

We have an attached Early Childhood Centre where our young parents are fully involved with their children’s day and on call if needed while ensuring pathways in education are achieved. The school has a support worker, access to a doctor and school nurse, and we also have three minivans to provide free transport to and from the school.

We have a wide network of services and agencies from within the community, an antenatal class is available for students, and we are supported with the ‘KickStart Breakfast’ Programme and provide lunch twice a week.

We are also very appreciative of the wider facilities that William Colenso College provides us with. For example: the climbing wall; the music suite; the canteen; basketball; and netball courts. We value healthy lifestyles and physical well-being and hope this is reflected in our programmes.

Education Opportunities

NCEA qualifications are the focus. When a student enrols an individual learning plan is developed to meet their needs and to formulate a career pathway that recognises their aspirations. Students can study a variety of subjects with the support of Te Kura, Specialist Teachers within the Teen Parent Unit and wider school.

Courses can be started throughout the year, depending on their personalised learning plan. Students are encouraged to transition to Tertiary Providers or the Workplace. Transition can include some part time learning at EIT while enrolled at the Teen Parent Unit. Opportunity to complete Parenting, Budgeting, and First Aid Courses is available.

Staff Credentials

We have four full time teachers who are specialists in English, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Te Reo, Health & PE, Home Economics, Art, Photography, History, Geography, Education Outside the Classroom. There are courses available in Tourism, Hospitality, Business Administration and Early Childhood Care and Education. STAR courses give us access to outside providers. We have mainstream classes available through our host school to provide other areas of student interest.
