A Chance for Children

He Huarahi Tamariki, (A Chance for Children) was established in 1994.  HHT is a school for teenage parents in the greater Wellington area. It was the first of a unique group of schools in New Zealand that provided a ‘second chance’ education to students who were unable to complete their basic, formal education because of pregnancy or childbirth while of school age. We are located in Linden, Wellington, very close to Linden station.

Facilities & Services

The HHT Complex comprises a purpose built school and a pre school (the Griffin School) which are housed under one roof.  Our host school is Wellington East Girls’ College. The HHT school has a maximum roll of 50 students and 5 equivalent full time teachers together with support staff and a number of dedicated, part time community volunteers. Facilities include an open plan classroom with networked computers for student use, further teaching spaces, a small library, a medical room, a fully equipped kitchen and dining area and an administration area. HHT has two vans, which transport local students and their children to school as well as assisting in school trips.

Childcare

The Griffin School provides 32 places for the children of our students. It is a well resourced facility providing quality childcare for our children. The HHT Trust is responsible for the governance of the Griffin School.

Academic Achievement

In partnership with Te Kura, the Correspondence School and a number of other providers, He Huarahi Tamariki focuses on high academic achievement as well as offering strong pastoral support and a civics programme. Students have individual learning programmes in line with the New Zealand curriculum. A Gateway and STAR programme is offered and students have the opportunity to transition to tertiary programmes while at HHT. Fundraising, volunteers and community interest continues to support and enhance all our programmes.

Student Support

Our student support programme includes working with social agencies, transport, visiting nurse and family planner, doctor, counsellor, QUIT coach, careers advisor, graduate co ordinator, Plunket and the provision of student meals as well as accessing other programmes as required.

Student Success

HHT has restored dignity, pride and an interest in learning to many young people.  Students have graduated in Science, Humanities, Medical Science, Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Business Studies, Applied Arts, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Nursing, and Legal Studies amongst others.  Currently one of our former students is studying for her PhD in Science at Victoria University while others are completing studies in Humanities, Nursing, Education (Early childhood). Our students have also joined the work force with a range of responsible and interesting positions.

Our students’ progress and results speak for themselves.  We are making a difference.  Our school motto is “of course you can do it” and the He Huarahi Tamariki family has proved that of course, they can.
