He Huarahi Tamariki (A Chance for Children) is a secondary school for young people who are pregnant or parenting. Students are able to complete their NCEA qualifications while their children are cared for on-site at Kids Count, a fully-licenced early childhood centre.
We offer a wide range of subjects at NCEA Levels 1–3 and University Entrance and we also provide programmes in:
We work closely with Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (The Correspondence School) and other providers to deliver these. Our host school is Wellington East Girls’ College.
Students come to He Huarahi Tamariki from Wellington, Porirua and the Kapiti coast. We provide transport in the Porirua area and the northern suburbs of Wellington or financial support towards travel expenses if you live further away.
We provide additional support to our students through a full-time counsellor, social support person, and a cook who provides morning tea and lunch and breakfast supplies. We also have regular visits from a doctor, a nurse, well-child services, and other social agencies. We receive strong community support from organisations and volunteers to provide these services.
He Huarahi Tamariki enrols students throughout the year and welcomes all enquiries. You are able to enrol either during pregnancy or after your baby is born. Please contact us to arrange a visit:
