We have a purpose-built childcare unit on-site with qualified ECE teachers run by the Kimihia Early Learning Trust. Meals are provided and students can visit their children at any time.
We teach to NCEA Level 1 to 3 plus a transition to university programme using STAR/UC, which means students study distance papers at the University of Canterbury. They don’t need to have UE.
Our students are here because they want a better life for themselves and their child. They are bright and motivated and it is our job to make sure they gain the success they want.
Our unit offers university papers and we are in the process of setting up online learning using Chrome Books.
Level 1 students study English, Maths, Science, Home Economics, Computing and Life Skills (all compulsory).
Level 2 and 3 students can study English, Plunket, Maths, Biology, Home Economics, Business Studies, Computing and Media in classes with teachers. All other subjects are through Te Kura.
We have an experienced staff of three teachers. James Abbott was a founding teacher and Bianca Nielsen has been here for many years starting part-time and now full-time.
Head Teacher, Diane Atkins teaches three classes – Business Applications and Digital Technologies which includes 3D printing, Robotics and Game Creation using Scratch. The remainder of the time she does admin.
James Abbott teaches Maths, Science and Home Economics at Level 1 and Biology and Home Economics at Levels 2 and 3 in conjunction with Te Kura. James is also now running a Barista course with a new commercial Barista machine on site.
Bianca Nielsen teaches English from Level 1 – 3, Media at Levels 2 and 3, Level 1 Life Skills and Level 2 and 3 Plunket.
