Te Whakatipuranga was established in 2002, on a site at the BOP Polytechnic in Tauranga. The school is governed by Otumoetai College but maintains a close relationship with the Polytechnic.
Students at Te Whakatipuranga can use all of the Polytechnic’s facilities including gym, swimming pool, cafes, learning centre; as well as having easy access to Polytechnic courses.
Students have participated in automobile, barista, sport, team building, beauty, bar tending and business administration courses at the Polytechnic.
The Polytechnic Early Childhood Centre is the main provider of childcare for the school, however students also have access to a kohanga on-site.

The school has a strong academic and career focus with students all having support to create clear career pathways for themselves.
Students can study a number of National Certificates as well as NCEA. These include certificates in Computing, Business Administration, Early Childhood, Retail, and Preparation for Tertiary Studies.
Students wanting to move onto University also have the opportunity to study 1 or 2 University papers to prepare themselves for studying at this level.
For students wanting to eventually enter the workforce the school has a work experience programme to prepare them for work.
The school has a social support worker, and a number of social services visit the school. Plunket, Parents as First Teachers, Dental service, Counsellors, Nurse, Doctor, and Ante-natal classes are available on-site.
The school has subject teachers for Mathematics, Computing and Business Administration, Science, English, Weaving, Te Reo and Tikanga.
As well students can access any other secondary subject, at any level, through Correspondence School. The school also employs two van drivers to transport students and their children to and from school.
