Whaimana Ako is Stratford High School’s TPU and was established in 2000. It was originally run by the Community Learning Centre but in 2010 a new building was purpose-built on the school premises, which also houses Koru Kindergarten, our Early Childhood Centre. Our students must be under 19 in they year they first enrol, and normally transition out in the year they turn 20.
Our programmes are designed specifically to give young parents an opportunity to improve their future employment prospects, and to assist in the education for their children.
All students are on an individual education plan which allows them to reach their next step, whether that is employment or further study.
The TPU can have up to 25 students on the roll at any one time. Transport is provided for the students and their children to and from school. We currently have two vans with a north run to New Plymouth, Waitara and Inglewood, and a south run from Hawera, Normanby, Eltham and Stratford.
Students prepare their own breakfast and morning tea, and lunch is part of the Food and Nutrition programme. Students participate in the meal planning, grocery shopping, and also preparation, eating and clean up.
A nurse practitioner visits the unit weekly and provides a free and confidential service for all students. The Early Childhood Centre – Koru Kindergarten is joined to the TPU and can cater for up to 35 children. The Centre is run by Kindergarten Taranaki.
Our primary provider is ‘Te Kura’ (Correspondence School). Students are also able to attend mainstream classes at Stratford High School.
Our programme is designed to give a formal education in an informal environment. NCEA level 1, 2 or 3 is our focus.
Students study a variety of subjects, ensuring the completion of Numeracy and Literacy. Students also have opportunities to study work-related unit standards such as; NZ Certificate in Health & Wellbeing L2 and L3, and National Certificate in Early Childhood Education L4.
We offer students the opportunity to gain their driver’s licence and driving lessons, and their comprehensive first aid certificate.
We also offer activities such as art, craft, kiwi sport and other life skills throughout the year.
Our head teacher is Tracey Jones. Our other full-time staff member is Fflur Morgan.
We also have a part-time teacher, Amanda Hill, who works mornings and does our relief.
